Governor Rendell was joined by Department of Health Secretary Everette James and Carolyn Scanlan, president and CEO of the Hospital and Health Association of Pennsylvania for press conference today to announce that “Pennsylvania is ready to provide medical and humanitarian care for some critically injured earthquake victims.” The governor sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Department of Homeland Secretary which said that several Pennsylvania hospitals are “willing to accept patients immediately despite a lack of clarity regarding federal reimbursement for services and how and when that will be provided.” Governor Rendell indicated that Florida is already treating some Haitian patients but the demand has caused the U.S. Transportation Command to reach out to additional states to help care for the victims. The House Judiciary Committee held an informational hearing to discuss the issue of mentally ill inmates in the state correctional facilities. The committee heard testimony from a concerned citizen, Peter Scherer, who was advocating for the establishment of a mental health volunteer advisory committee. Chairman Tom Caltagirone (D-Berks) also revealed that the Department of Corrections will likely ask for a budget increase of $200 million this fiscal year. Click here to read the Associated Press article. DEP TO HIRE MORE OIL AND GAS DRILLING INSPECTORS According to an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer, Gov. Rendell announced yesterday that Pennsylvania will hire 68 more oil and gas inspectors this year to respond to the Marcellus Shale boom, a 54 percent increase in staff. The new hires will allow the Department of Environmental Protection to manage an expected threefold increase in applications to drill natural gas wells in the Marcellus, which lies under much of the state.
