Health & Human Services Budget Briefing

The Department of Public Welfare, Insurance Department, and Department of Aging held a joint health and human services budget briefing this afternoon. The three secretaries discussed their departments’ proposed FY2010-11 budget, explained why certain decisions were made, and discussed alternatives should funding not be available.

GOP Gubernatorial Candidate Calls for Debate before Endorsement

Republican gubernatorial candidate Rep. Samuel Rohrer (R-Berks) called on party leaders and the Republican State Committee  to host a statewide televised debate between him and Attorney General Tom Corbett before endorsing a candidate at the committee’s February 13th meeting. Speaking before the Pennsylvania Press Club, Rep. Rohrer said, “Instead of becoming the next state party to endorse a candidate without cause and set off a grassroots revolt, give rank and file Republicans  a window into the process.” He went on to say, ”Ask us about our world view, our policy proposals and how we propose to get Pennsylvania out of the economic ditch.” Rep. Rohrer also argued that “by pursuing a top heavy, not a bottom up, approach to candidate selection, Republicans are missing the best opportunity they have to build a strong, idea-driven party.”

Gerlach featured at Press Club Luncheon

Congressman and Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Jim Gerlach was the featured speaker at today’s Press Club Luncheon. The Chester County Republican recounted his Western Pennsylvania childhood and explained his “Pledge to Pennsylvania,” a 17-point contract he believes will protect taxpayers and create jobs. Marcellus Shale Committee Co-Chair Ray Walker featured at Press Club

Ray Walker, Co-Chair of the Marcellus Shale Committee and Vice President of  Range Resources, spoke at today’s Press Club luncheon on the potential benefits for Pennsylvania contained within the natural gas field. In his remarks, Walker cautioned against implementing a severance tax on gas extraction, and downplayed the risks of drinking water contamination as largely a product of the media. Speaker McCall featured at Press Club Luncheon

House Speaker Keith McCall (D-Carbon) offered remarks at today’s Press Club Luncheon. Speaker McCall offered comments on the state of the budget, the governor’s proposed PIT increase (he is in favor), rate caps, transportation, business taxation and other issues. Pat Toomey Speaks at Press Club Luncheon

Republican Senate hopeful Pat Toomey was featured at today’s Press Club luncheon, and spoke on subjects including the country’s current economic climate and his chances against a newly Democratic Arlen Specter.  Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.

Senate Game & Fisheries – 12:00 noon

The Senate Game Committee held a hearing this morning to receive an update from the Fish and Boat Commission on the commission’s annual report. PFBC Executive Director Doug Austen highlighted the commission’s activities and suggested alternative funding sources so the commission is not faced with significant fee increases every 7-10 years.

Senate Game & Fisheries – 9:30 a.m.

The committee voted to report as committed SB 301, SB 302, SB 535, and HB 281. They also voted to report as amended SB 574 and HB 92. Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the full story.

Senate Game and Fisheries – 12:00 p.m.

Carl Roe, Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Game Commission delivered the Commission’s annual report to the committee. Roe stated “we are proud of our accomplishments over the past fiscal year and we took a very fugal approach to our spending as we strive to fulfill our mission.” Committee members inquired about the deer population, mentored youth program and the wind energy voluntary cooperative agreement.
