Senate Government Management and Cost Study Commission Discusses Savings With Executive Branch

The Senate Government Management and Cost Study Commission held a hearing on cost savings today with members of the Executive Branch. Secretaries Naomi Wyatt, Mary Soderberg, and James Creedon testified on the ways the Rendell Administration has focused on cost-savings. House Judiciary – 11:00 a.m.

The House Judiciary Committee held an informational meeting with the Pennsylvania District Attorney’s Association regarding their legislative agenda. At the informal meeting, the Association was represented by Dauphin County DA Ed Marsico, Montgomery County DA Risa Ferman, and Cumberland County DA David Freed. Senate Government Management and Cost Study Commission

The Senate Government Management and Cost Study Commission held its first meeting today. The Commission, which consists of ten members from government and the private sector first elected Senator Dave Argall (R-Schuylkill) as its Chairman. Following the election of Senator Argall, the commission’s members introduced themselves and then took testimony from Walter Baran, Former Secretary of General Services under Governor Thornburgh. Baran testified about the cost reduction study team he chaired during Governor Thornburgh’s term. The full story will be available in the Capitol Toolbox this afternoon.

House Appropriations Budget Hearing with the PA State Police

Pennsylvania State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski sat before the House Appropriations Committee to discuss the implications of the Governor’s proposed budget on the agency. Some of the questions asked regarded the current complement of the police force, the cost of cadet training, and the policing of casinos as table games become effective. The House Appropriations Committee met to consider 9 bills. HBs 528, 1831, and 1993 were reported as committed along with SBs 237 and 605. HBs 1251, 2026, 2041, and 2066 were all reported as amended. Check the Capitol Toolbox later for the rest of the story.

DeWeese to announce decision on future Thursday

Former House Democratic Leader Bill DeWeese (D-Greene) will announce Thursday at 4 p.m. if he will seek re-election this year.

DeWeese, the majority whip earlier this year, was forced to give up his post after being indicted in the attorney  general’s wide-ranging public corruption investigation, known as “Bonusgate.” He has been the caucus’ majority leader and speaker of the House in previous sessions.

DeWeese has served in the legislature 34 years.

House Appropriations Committee – Budget Hearing with Attorney General – 1:00 p.m.

The House Appropriations Committee continued their 2010 budget hearings today, beginning with a question and answer session about the budget submitted by the Attorney General. The Attorney General asked for a 2% overall increase in the budget to help account for fixed costs and contractual agreements. Reps. Cutler, Denlinger, Krieger, and Swanger Introduce Legislation to Make General Assembly Part-Time

Representatives Bryan Cutler (R-Lancaster), Gordon Denlinger (R-Lancaster), Tim Krieger (R-Westmoreland), and RoseMarie Swanger (R-Lebanon) held a press conference today introducing HB 1554, a bill that would change the General Assembly from a full-time to a part-time legislature. House Consumer Affairs – 2:00 p.m.
